Daredevil fundraising for #TeamLizzie

Rachel Diamond explains why, earlier this month, some of our Pegasus team held their nerve and their breath to abseil down the Emirates Spinnaker Tower.

Lizzie, a dear friend and colleague of ours, is currently battling a rare form of malignant cancer – Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC). Lizzie’s tumour originated in her mouth and has sadly been identified to be an aggressive and high stage (stage 4) form of the disease. However, with the right treatment, she should have a good prognosis.

Lizzie has recently undergone two radical surgical procedures which involved major jaw surgery and reconstruction and is about to embark on an intensive course of radiation called ‘proton beam therapy’ which involves being treated every weekday for nearly two months. Overall recovery time from surgery is estimated to be around 9 months, while recovery from radiation can take up to 2 years.

Lizzie has made such an impact at Pegasus with her inspirational and tenacious personality, that we felt we just had to do something challenging to help support her through this long recovery and to keep spirits high. In fact, it turned out to be 170m high!

On the 17th June and 4th August 2018, thirteen brave Pegasus daredevils scaled the dizzying heights of the world famous Emirates Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth as part of our fundraising support for #TeamLizzie.

The tower is two and a half times the size of Nelson’s Column and, in high winds, can flex up to 150mm! And while offering great views of the south coast, this became incidental when having to manoeuvre yourself off a tiny ledge, hang onto rope, then dangle off and abseil down all 170 meteres!

The team found the experience a challenge to say the least, but it is nothing compared to what Lizzie is going through and thoughts of her spurred us on. With a little encouragement, a few tears, sheer determination and buckets of adrenaline, we got all feet safely on the ground and had smashed the Spinnaker!

The team felt extremely relieved to complete the abseil, but mostly an overwhelming sense of pride and team spirit that we took the challenge on together to support the lovely Lizzie. The nerves, tears and sick feelings were all worth it!

This is just one of the many #TeamLizzie challenges that we’re organising over the next few months to help raise vital funds to go towards costs for Lizzie’s intensive treatment and rehabilitation. You can find out more here.
